Tiger Terry 6; South Adelaide 5

Glenelg v South Adelaide (15 July 2017) What’s that well-known saying? “Bad kicking is bad…something.” Anyway, both sides had 23 scoring shots on goal but South missed on 18 of its 23 occasions – therein lies much of the story. Still, Glenelg was clearly superior on the day, much more organised in midfield and attack, and applying substantial pressure in defence to cause error in front of the visitor’s goal.  Curran, Sellar and co. were terrific in defence, which is a lot better organised and seasoned these days. Terry Milera was outstanding with 6 goals, as were Ian Milera and Dom…

In a League of Its Own / Straight Through the Middle

An exhibition celebrating 140 years of the South Australian National Football League and SA Football (State Library, June – August 2017) The Varnished Culture staff set aside partisanship and went to these twin homages to local footy. An interesting congregation of photos, video, medallions, badges, guernseys, books, scrapbooks, committee minute-books and other memorabilia, we could have done with a bit more, but it was a piquant taste nonetheless. SA clubs at every level, several long defunct, featured in rich and diverse parade. In this winter of discontent, a little unbalanced reporting suffused with weary, wistful nostalgia for the Glenelg Tigers glory (or at least,…

New Australians of the Year

The Council of The Wise has announced a new category of Australian of the Year. Those eligible for “New Australian of the Year” are those great men and women from foreign forebears or other shores, folks whose lives were the template for, and reflect, the current splendid diversity that forms the Australian nation. Nominees can be alive or dead and must embody a facet of the country’s contemporary essence. Categories were submitted to the 2020 Summit (April 2008, which was designed by Prime Minister Rudd to “help shape a long term strategy for the nation’s future.”) Since then, over the last 8 years,…

Four-and-twenty Crows Reserves, Baked in a Pie

Glenelg v Adelaide, 3 June 2017 @ Glenelg Oval 5th vs 6th @ Gliderol, with Adelaide’s rolling stock up and about early, leading 3 goals to 2. But you wonder if they try really, their core business being to finish games intact, in case they are needed for the AFL team the following week. How else to explain the next three quarters, with Glenelg kicking 12 goals to 3? Certainly the Milera boys, Josh Scott, Dom Barry, Todd Slade, and Liam McBean (above) in attack were well on top, as were the boys mid-field and in defence. Although there were a similar…

“Let’s Do It for Willow” Glenelg v West Adelaide

May 28, 2017 | Posted by Peter Jakobsen | AUSTRALIANIA, LIFE |

Glenelg Tigers vs West Adelaide Bloods @ Glenelg, 27 May 2017 Do you remember the old-fashioned “spray”? That’s when a coach feels it is time to get in the face of a team that has promise, potential and polish, but doesn’t seem to produce it when required. On Saturday, after three insipid quarters against bottom-of-the-barrel West Adelaide, that’s what the Glenelg Tigers got. Senior Coach Matthew Lokan spent a good chunk of ‘lemon time’ delivering a fair old bake to the team that trailed a team with a player list bulleted by injuries and AFL absentees. At that stage, it…
