Grey Masts

Beach House, 36-38 Smillie Street, Robe, South Australia (February 2023)

South to Robe, a 337 kilometre drive from Adelaide, for a weekend conference, TVC stayed at Grey Masts, a 3 bedroom beach house in the heart of town. Described as a “Charming Drinking Village with a Fishing Problem,” Robe was founded in the 1840s and now survives less as a port than a tourist attraction.

Grey Masts is 3 minutes walk from Robe’s beautiful beach, where the Robe Motel sits; 1 minute from the Caledonian Inn, an 1850s English-style pub, which is over the road (you get to hear the pub’s concerts, so be prepared) and a few minutes beyond, numerous chic cafes, restaurants, shops, bars, and a micro-brewery. Good wineries are within easy driving reach.
With the conference schedule packed tightly with ‘refreshment sessions,’ it was a welcome solace to hang out in the beautiful rooms and garden.
The interior design (furnishings, artworks and objet-d’art, lighting), is really impressive; JJ, the creator, has obviously made it a labour of love.
Unlike your bog-standard b’n’b, the library is superb: from a sumptuous range of art books to a terrific array of high-class fiction and non-fiction. We wished to stay an extra day to read, but “all too soon” (as Russell Coite would say) we had to be on our way. Robe and its Limestone Coast environs are a must-visit, and we can’t think of any better base than Grey Masts.
