All Making It Up as They Go

(With apologies to Blaise Cendrars’ “The Captain is a Terrific Guy”) All the same the P.M.’s a terrific guy Yesterday he had a quarantine hub set up just for me Today without much word and simply to please the Victorian Gangsters and their running dogs He swung the plane around And skirted New Zealand’s bubble so closely I could have almost seen                                                                         the New…

When a Fruit Tingle Sucks

(Glenelg vs Adelaide, Glenelg Oval, 29 May, 2021) A beautiful late autumn day at Glenelg, nary a breeze, sun up all day, cold as a witch’s whatever.  The Adelaide Crows (at SANFL level) are a good idea for a football team – talent, certainly, but they seem more inclined to collect stats and avoid injury so they have a show of playing in ‘The Show’ the following week, rather than have a genuine go. Luke Reynolds (five) and Liam McBean (four) kicked nine goals between them, 3 more than the entire opposition. Exciting newcomer Gibson Turner kicked 3 goals, one…

Tiger Times Again

May 24, 2021 | Posted by Peter Jakobsen | AUSTRALIANIA, LIFE |

Glenelg vs Everyone, May 2021 1 May, 2021: After a close but decisive win over the Olde Enemy, Glenelg had three challenging matches to conclude in order to perch atop the premiership table. North have been a bit off their feed this year but always challenge at Prospect Oval, that weirdly configured graveyard for visiting teams arriving unprepared. However, the Tigers saw the threat off. Glenelg 15.10 (100) North Adelaide 10.9 (69) 9 May 2021: Glenelg hosted struggling Sturt at the bay. For a struggling side, they do a good impression of the other: it was an arm wrestle all…

Panel of the Solicitors General – Adelaide University John Bray Alumni Network, 29 April 2021 In the Exhibition Hall of the National Wine Centre, a pretty remarkable gathering took place: 6 Solicitors-General for South Australia presented thoughts on their respective tenure. The main image shows the panel: L-R Gray QC, Doyle QC, Kourakis CJ, John Williams (Executive Dean, Faculty of the Professions, as MC), Hinton QC, Bleby J, Wait SC (and facilitator and introducer Judge Katrina Bochner). That photo, incidentally, was snapped before proceedings commenced – the crowd was actually very healthy, even though, curiously for the NWC, no wine…

The Grail of Sport is to Beat Port

April 26, 2021 | Posted by Peter Jakobsen | AUSTRALIANIA, LIFE |

Glenelg v Port Adelaide (@ Glenelg Oval, 24 April 2021) A healthy crowd on a beautiful autumnal evening enjoyed a terrific tussle between the 2019 Grand Finalists. Port were up and about, emblematized by Sam Powell-Pepper (who was annoyingly like salt-and-pepper; i.e. everywhere). Although the Tigers actually won every quarter, none of them were by much, and the lead changed or closed throughout the game. It was (pardon the cliché) an ‘arm wrestle.’ In the Presidents Room, 100 years of memorabilia were arrayed, reminding all that the sum of a Club is so much more than its premierships. The team…
