5 Reasons to Learn Ancient Greek – New Beginners’ Class!

June 18, 2018 | Posted by Lesley Jakobsen | HISTORY | 0 Comments |

As TVC devotees know, I am in my fifth year of Ancient (or, more properly, Classical) Greek at the WEA with Dr Alessandro Boria.  Now, for the first time we will have a beginners’ class as well as the more advanced class.  Here are 5 good reasons why you should sign up today to the new class:-

Here are the first two reasons, which it is compulsory for us to recite –

  1. Learning a language develops and hones the brain – the older the language, the more ancient its roots in human thought and the better for the grey matter;
  2. You would like to read Homer in the ‘original.’

OK, having got that out of the way – here are the real reasons why you should take up Ancient Greek at the WEA –

  1. You’d like to insult your slave, and write your shopping list in a language which no-one else understands;
  2. You’re desperate to read about Dikaeopolis, grandfather (oi moi!) and the whole family in the Greek 1 textbook, “Athenaze,” and
  3. Studying Ancient Greek gives good boasting value and makes you look really intellectual when people ask what you do on Thursday evenings.

Don’t be put off by the alphabet, you’ll know that in an hour.  But you’ll spend the rest of your life learning Greek.

Join our wonderful teacher Dr Alessandro Boria on Thursdays at 5.45 pm from the 26th July 2018.

WEA – 223 Angas Street, Adelaide.  Phone 8223 1979 or online https://www.wea-sa.com.au/search_results.php
