Inherit the Wind

Proverbs, 11:29 – “He that troubleth his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.” ——- I watched this Stanley Kramer bag-of-wind With that pair of plump boiled hams, Tracy and March, In a hot and dusty courtroom, having a fine old time Debating whether a schoolteacher had sinned. Kids bit into the apple when their brains began to parch So he taught them evolution was no crime. Tracy, playing Darrow, fought the case upon the law, In other words he posed as legislator. But the facts were dead against him, so,…

Happy New Year

December 31, 2015 | Posted by Peter Jakobsen | LIFE, Ulalume |

The Varnished Culture wishes humans and wee beasties a Happy New Year, excepting mosquitos and humans that insist on acting like animals.  As artist Francis Bacon toasted, ‘Champagne for our real friends, and real pain for our sham friends!’  And at midnight, when the moment hopefully arises, rather than croaking Auld Lang Syne, better to murmur to your loved one a good Robbie Burns poem: Till a’ the seas gang dry, my dear, And the rocks melt wi’ the sun: I will luve thee still, my dear, While the sands o’ life shall run.

So space and time are relative and can only be measured by magic rulers and Dali clocks.  The universe has no universals.  But at least the General Theory didn’t lead to a bomb – merely the event horizon. I don’t know what I’m talking about.  My random words don’t satisfy the theory of descriptions (linguistics’ homage to relativity).  Einstein knew what he was talking…

'Don't need men if you have cats.'

(Dir. David and Albert Maysles) (1976) Lifestyles of the squalid and shameless…Edith and Edie Beale live in their ramshackle mansion in the Hamptons, cats lolling about, voiding, and racoons climbing through great holes in the roof.  Daughter Edie swans about, recalling an interrupted career on Broadway; mother Edith (aunt to Jackie Onassis) sits in bed, watching, like a big spider.  Two years of footage has been distilled into doco-length, where not much occurs beyond regular ranting, but try to look away.  This eye-view seems like exploitation to us, but, nevertheless, of definite morbid interest.  For this reason, it has since been filmed…
