When a Fruit Tingle Sucks

(Glenelg vs Adelaide, Glenelg Oval, 29 May, 2021) A beautiful late autumn day at Glenelg, nary a breeze, sun up all day, cold as a witch’s whatever.  The Adelaide Crows (at SANFL level) are a good idea for a football team – talent, certainly, but they seem more inclined to collect stats and avoid injury so they have a show of playing in ‘The Show’ the following week, rather than have a genuine go. Luke Reynolds (five) and Liam McBean (four) kicked nine goals between them, 3 more than the entire opposition. Exciting newcomer Gibson Turner kicked 3 goals, one…

Eurovision 2021 (Rotterdam)

May 25, 2021 | Posted by Lesley Jakobsen | LIFE, Modern Music, MUSIC, THEATRE |

The Varnished Culture had night sweats and knotted stomachs awaiting the return of the Eurovision Song Contest. On ice in 2020 due to something or other, we had only Will Ferrell’s lovely tribute to sustain us for a year. Even now, Covid’s ugly head reared and “prevented” the Australian contingent from attending Rotterdam in person. This perhaps caused Australia’s offering, “Technicolour” by Montaigne, to fall at the semi-final stage, which is patently unfair and unjust. Still, Eurovision is the byword for dazzling, iridescent mediocrity, so there we are. Our points system, you’ll recall, rates each song on ‘real world merit,’…

North have been a bit off their feed this year but always challenge at Prospect Oval, that weirdly configured graveyard for visiting teams arriving unprepared. However, the Tigers saw the threat off. Glenelg 15.10 (100) North Adelaide 10.9 (69) 9 May 2021: Glenelg hosted struggling Sturt at the bay. For a struggling side, they do a good impression of the other: it was an arm wrestle all…

Panel of the Solicitors General – Adelaide University John Bray Alumni Network, 29 April 2021 In the Exhibition Hall of the National Wine Centre, a pretty remarkable gathering took place: 6 Solicitors-General for South Australia presented thoughts on their respective tenure. The main image shows the panel: L-R Gray QC, Doyle QC, Kourakis CJ, John Williams (Executive Dean, Faculty of the Professions, as MC), Hinton QC, Bleby J, Wait SC (and facilitator and introducer Judge Katrina Bochner). That photo, incidentally, was snapped before proceedings commenced – the crowd was actually very healthy, even though, curiously for the NWC, no wine…

Four

April 27, 2021 | Posted by Peter Jakobsen | LIFE, Ulalume |

In our material universe, science finds four categories of sex in Homo Sapiens: Old Traditional # 1 Who produce ovum (“Woman”) Old Traditional # 2 Who produce sperm (“Man”) Small Sliver (# 3) With gender dysphoria or intersex anatomy (who deserve love, compassion, understanding, and perhaps, especially if given high office in the Biden Administration, treatment) Burgeoning New Category (# 4) “Fraudsters” If I can’t win a medal in my shotput division, I may do better turning out on the track in a skirt. Not bright enough to gain admission to Law School? If I reimagine myself as a disabled…
