An Old-Fashioned Spray

Glenelg v Adelaide, Glenelg Oval, 3 July 2021 The Tigers were at a disadvantage, working out what a damp and chilly day would bring: an early start, an opposition (and supporters) that sometimes don’t turn up at all (metaphorically and literally, respectively). Only this time the Crows had turned up, ready to play. With an impressive list of 17 AFL stars, they matched Glenelg, and more, for the first 3 quarters, leading at every change. At three-quarter time, Adelaide led by 8 points with the breeze more from the west than the south. It was time for an old-fashioned spray,…

The Faucian Bargain

(With apologies to Christina Rossetti and her “Goblin Market”) Morning and evening Folks heard the coolies cry: “Come buy our pangolins, Come by, come buy; Bats and lemurs, Bits of Uyghurs, Human femurs, Embargoed seegars – All ripe together In wintry weather,- Morns that pass by, Fair foreign bats fly; Come by, come by; Pass the wet market.” ♠ Evening by evening Beyond the fence and bollards, Shi Zhengli bowed her head to hear, Her Wuhan boss, who hollered “Lady, veil your blushes Crouch in your office like a cave In the cooling weather; With cautioning arms and clasping lips,…

The holy trinity – Liam McBean, Marlon Motlop and Luke Reynolds – had a big…

A fine footballing couple of days, one in which defeat stared closely at us but in which the Glenelg Football Club dug deep to find the riches of victory and regain a lost weekend: Glenelg v West Adelaide (SANFL Womens Grand Final) May 5, 2021; Glenelg v Norwood at Norwood Oval, May 6, 2021. THE GRAND FINAL The Glenelg Ladies’ Team [Can one still say ladies? – Ed.] took on tough opponent West in the Grand Final at Thebarton Oval, looking far more picturesque than we remembered it. The Women’s competition seems entirely admirable: the players are tough and committed, and…

All Making It Up as They Go

(With apologies to Blaise Cendrars’ “The Captain is a Terrific Guy”) All the same the P.M.’s a terrific guy Yesterday he had a quarantine hub set up just for me Today without much word and simply to please the Victorian Gangsters and their running dogs He swung the plane around And skirted New Zealand’s bubble so closely I could have almost seen                                                                         the New…
