“Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What it Doesn’t, and Why it Matters” By Steven E. Koonin (2021) “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” This book posits facts, hypotheses, and urging which we are not qualified to judge.  It is also full of graphs that gave us acute conjunctivitis.  So what we will do here is attempt a summary of what Mr. Koonin is saying, much of which he says very well, and attempt to explain our reaction to the work, located somewhere on the spectrum between skepticism and a resigned…

Glenelg v South Adelaide at Glenelg Oval, 17 July 2021 In what might be the last Tigers game for awhile, given an impending Covid clampdown (not a lockdown, our masters stress), we had a beauty against southern neighbours, the South Adelaide Panthers. The storms of Friday had blown out by the early 1.35 pm start, and an arctic sun waxed and waned over the afternoon. With a brisk southerly breeze, the scoring favoured the Kerhanan end of the ground, leaving the teams close at the half. And the Bays couldn’t break open the game in the third quarter, with each…

The Covid-19 Hall of Shame

July 14, 2021 | Posted by Peter Jakobsen | AUSTRALIANIA, HISTORY, LIFE, Ulalume |

911 deaths in Australia from (with?) Covid, in 18 months. 169,301 registered and received deaths in Australia in 2019 (pre-Covid). Are we missing something here? Like a sense of proportion? Pardon our manners, but here we must quote ourselves : “In this plague year…we saw Australians banned from returning to their own country; banned from leaving it; banned from crossing state lines, in apparent/arguable breach of section 92 of the Constitution; locked in their homes unless adjudged by a bureaucrat as ‘essential workers’; arrested on beaches, golf courses, parks (and in the case of one pregnant woman in Victoria, handcuffed…

Blue Ain’t Our Colour

Glenelg v Sturt, Unley Oval, 10 July 2021 Under a sunny, cool sky, the Tigers couldn’t shake off a persistent Sturt in the first half. They were getting plenty of the footy but wasted their efforts through disorganized approaches to goal. But by the end of the 3rd quarter, the natural order had been restored: the dominant midfield (Snook, Turner, Partington, Agnew – Bradley and Allen on the wings,) got value for repeated entries in attack and the work was finished off. Coach Brett Hand emphasized the key statistic at lemon time: 40 contested possessions to 19.  And the resulting…

An Old-Fashioned Spray

July 4, 2021 | Posted by Peter Jakobsen | AUSTRALIANIA, LIFE |

Glenelg v Adelaide, Glenelg Oval, 3 July 2021 The Tigers were at a disadvantage, working out what a damp and chilly day would bring: an early start, an opposition (and supporters) that sometimes don’t turn up at all (metaphorically and literally, respectively). Only this time the Crows had turned up, ready to play. With an impressive list of 17 AFL stars, they matched Glenelg, and more, for the first 3 quarters, leading at every change. At three-quarter time, Adelaide led by 8 points with the breeze more from the west than the south. It was time for an old-fashioned spray,…
